Together, Once, We Dreamed

Sometimes, in my dreams, I dream of how things could have been
How we would laugh, banter, and hug.
But instead of all that, I threw it away with a shrug
Relegating those days, I envy into the bin.

I know I shouldn’t dwell on the what-ifs
especially given everything I have been given
Things now, have been ok despite my decision
But then I see something that reminds me of you.

You were my best friend back then. We shared everything.
We would cheer together in our success and cry through our pains
Our dreams were intertwined, and our plans were also
We knew that no matter what, what we had would be forever.

That was until it wasn’t.

You see, I have a special talent
When things are going great, I go out of my way to make them break.

I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to make things better
I’ve liked things, emailed, and even considered sending a letter
But part of me knows that can never happen for me,
Because what I did, it has to come with a fee.

I once said, long ago, I did once make a statement
At the time I saw your eyes twinkle with hope and dream
But it never came to fruition, at the time that I did say it
I guess that’s fitting now that I am facing it.
