The Pawn

Perhaps the most underrated piece on the board, invisible to all
The pawn is oft ignored along its trek, save for when it is doubled or undefended.
The opening treats the pawn as the thing for the centre, and the thing to move,
making room for the back rank, the middle game begins.

But though it may not shine, its moves limited, its value overlooked
The pawn has a superpower that in the late game reveals
For when the pawn makes it to the back of the board, a Queen it’s destined to be.

In life you’re not so different, though you may not know it.
But the moves you make today, however small, are a square gained.
And while the conflict rages around you,
You slowly make your way forward step by step, avoiding it all.

Then one day you reach your goal, and then you see
that lowly pawn that crossed the board, a journey finally closed,
has transformed itself to become something more,
The Queen that sees across the board, invisibility transcended.
